A Way Out’s vengeance-driven storyline is organized around flashbacks depicting how Vincent and his adjacent cellmate Leo found themselves in this predicament until the narrative catches up with them aboard an airplane and continues from there. It undulates and fluctuates like a film, and it somewhat resembles one as well, notwithstanding a runtime approximately three times lengthier than your typical theater experience.
You will invest a significant portion of it, around six hours, with your controller set aside, observing cutscenes. However, you’re also frequently at liberty to roam around in many of those instances, with the screen consistently divided to facilitate the freedom of movement and exploration for both players.
Leo and Vincent each harbor plausible motivations that become apparent as the story unravels. Similarly, the actors’ performances improve as the plot advances, with the majority of notably wooden dialogue delivery confined to the initial scenes. It’s as though they needed to acquaint themselves with each other, much like our need to familiarize ourselves with them.
Engaging in a conversation with the same NPC separately as Leo and Vincent are intriguing, as the discussion usually unfolds similarly, but the course of those interactions will be entirely different. Leo tends to be more aggressive and action-oriented, whereas Vincent opts to negotiate his way out of challenging situations. Consequently, when faced with the choice of handling a tense encounter with a curious police officer either Leo’s way or Vincent’s way, Leo aims to incapacitate him, while Vincent simulates a highly contagious illness.
The duo of prison-breakers doesn’t always see eye to eye, and occasionally they even vie against each other, akin to genuine frenemies, generating entertaining player-versus-player moments. Neither my cooperative partner nor I would yield during our button-mashing arm-wrestling showdown, even though it held no relevance to the game or the narrative, and I took entirely unnecessary satisfaction in defeating him in Connect Four (twice). Occasionally, it felt as though we were truly embodying these characters.
A Way Out’s most exceptional moments arise when it is at its most cinematic. For instance, the superbly choreographed hospital escape scene maintains an uninterrupted “camera shot” even as controls cleverly transition between Leo and Vincent, while the previously mentioned conclusion seamlessly melds cinematography and gameplay in ingenious ways.
A back-to-back climb up a towering maintenance shaft reminiscent of Splinter Cell demanded the utmost cooperation and communication, eliciting laughter at every misstep. It represented the zenith of the compulsory cooperative gameplay enforced here. Should you approach A Way Out Torrent with the notion that its obligatory two-player co-op is a mere gimmick, you’ll likely conclude that it could not have been executed differently. The outcome is an unforgettable, diverse, and cinematic escapade that gives the impression of what Telltale’s games might have become had they embraced game mechanics instead of phasing them out.
