Chivalry 2 Torrent is an action game developed by Torn Banner Studios and published by Tripwire Presents. Chivalry 2 launches you into stylish, vivid battlefields with up to 64 players engaged in objective-driven team modes or a colossal free-for-all. Although the number of maps is currently limited, I was quite impressed with the ones available. Each map features a diverse array of goals to assault and defend, captivating terrain and architecture, a well-balanced mix of open spaces and bottlenecks, and excellent overall pacing. One moment may involve pushing colossal siege towers towards a wall with ballista bolts raining down, while the next may find you attempting to plunder as much wealth as possible from a village and transporting it back to your cart before time expires.

Instead of requiring you to construct an intricate custom loadout with your preferred weapons and armor, Chivalry presents 12 predefined classes grouped into four archetypes, with four accessible initially and the remainder unlocked progressively. Additionally, you can unlock new primary and secondary weapons within each class, providing a significant sense of progression. While I was initially disappointed by the inability to freely mix and match, I soon discovered that there are kits supporting nearly every playstyle imaginable, from a lethal crossbow sniper to a frenzied, axe-hurling berserker.

The core of the experience, naturally, is the combat system, and after investing more than 30 hours, I find it delightful. It may not be the most realistic medieval brawler, but this is a power fantasy, not a documentary. The overall flow and the limitations on how much an exceptionally skilled player can dominate the battlefield strike a satisfying balance for me. However, ascending to the top of the leaderboards is not as simple as wildly swinging a mace around.

There are just sufficient ways to assault, deflect, counter, dodge, and parry that quick thinking and adaptability in response to your opponent’s actions are crucial. Executing these moves once you’ve committed to a decision doesn’t demand godlike reflexes or ultra-precise mouse movements. While there is a high skill ceiling, the gap between a moderately skilled player and a highly skilled one is narrower compared to a game like Mordhau, a strategic decision that I appreciate.

Recognizing that the majority of players fall into the average or below-average skill level, it ensures that even less proficient players can still enjoy themselves; after all, the best blade master requires teammates to achieve objectives. Furthermore, it avoids feeling excessively arcade-like, addressing a concern I had with the initial Chivalry.

My experience with Chivalry 2 Torrent has been immensely enjoyable. Despite a few balance concerns on some maps, the overall experience is fantastic, from the gleaming armor to the towering castle walls, looks visually appealing, and the diverse range of objectives keeps the gameplay intriguing. Whether I’m wielding a sword or employing a bow, the combat strikes a delicate balance between accessible, enjoyable chaos and rewarding, skill-driven mechanics that separate the skilled from the less proficient. When you respawn and find everyone around you enthusiastically using the battle cry button as you charge into inevitable defeat, you can be certain you’re in for an exhilarating time. I anticipate keeping this well-worn coat of mail in active duty for quite some time.
