Cult of the Lamb immerses you in the fluffy hooves of a sect leader recently revived by a captive deity known as The One Who Awaits. Now it’s your responsibility to liberate your master by enlisting fresh devotees to the congregation, establishing a foundation for their residence, and embarking on brutal campaigns against the supernatural beings that ensnared him. The cycle of collecting provisions, caring for your worshippers, enhancing both your character and your dwelling, and then repeating the process is remarkably gratifying, with an enchanting art style and expressive animations that inject delight into every merciless facet of it.
While Cult of the Lamb Torrent Magnet operates as a roguelike dungeon crawler that randomizes level configurations and the items encountered during each run as you progressively enhance your capabilities, directly comparing it to analogous games like Hades or Rogue Legacy might be somewhat misleading. Each crusade is randomized and repeatable in a similar fashion, but they are notably shorter – typically lasting around just 10 minutes.
At the outset of each run, you even choose one of four distinct areas to traverse, with a boss awaiting defeat after each one to advance the narrative. This means Cult of the Lamb lacks the familiar roguelike tension of determining how far into the gauntlet you can venture each time.
Despite the ghastly appearance of Cult of the Lamb’s major adversaries, many of them transform into delightfully endearing companions of your stature upon defeat – companions who can subsequently be enlisted to your cult back at home. The action segments may propel the relatively straightforward plot forward, but the core progression lies in base construction. Transforming individuals discovered in the field allows you to put them to work, gathering resources such as wood and stone, venerating your image to generate devotion, or tidying up the waste they generously scatter around your encampment.
Initially, much of the work will fall on your shoulders, but it is incredibly satisfying to witness the growth of your base – both technologically and aesthetically – as you recruit additional followers. Both your base and your lamb possess tech trees to ascend, unlocking either new structures to erect or new abilities and weapons to discover, respectively. This means tasks like manually watering your farms can eventually be delegated to your recruits, and progressively intriguing options emerge, enabling you to dispatch followers on expeditions for resources or even temporarily transform them into demons to assist you in battle.
Cult of the Lamb Torrent is as charming as it is disquieting, a diverse fusion of genres and themes that harmonize exceptionally well. Although its combat is highly gratifying, the brevity of its runs and the relative lack of diversity between them may not offer the enduring allure found in other action roguelikes. Nonetheless, constructing my very own cult base and attending to a flock of followers was just as enjoyable as any swing of the axe. While I may not revisit it now that the credits have rolled, Cult of the Lamb is a unique experience that I thoroughly enjoyed playing.
