Days Gone Torrent is an action survival game developed by Bend Studio and published by PlayStation PC. Similar to many elements in Days Gone, the act of hunting merely exists as a presence, an idea introduced and then randomly discarded. In contrast to hunting, some of these concepts briefly shine at the moment, yet most aspects of Days Gone lack a clear sense of purpose. Numerous narrative threads flirt with the potential for meaning and intrigue but never fully commit, with characters whose actions and motivations remain perplexing.
Riding a high-powered motorcycle through the game world, eliminating zombie nests and hordes, offers satisfaction akin to completing checklists in open-world games. However, as the story unfolds, one is left pondering the overarching purpose of these endeavors.
The initial segment of the game, spanning around 20 hours, establishes various narrative arcs. Two years post the initial “Freaker” outbreak, comrades Deacon St. John and Boozer have transformed into drifters, undertaking odd jobs for nearby survivor camps while mostly keeping to themselves. Deacon’s wife, Sarah, was assaulted at the onset of the outbreak, prompting Deacon to place her on a government helicopter bound for a refugee camp for medical attention. Unfortunately, upon Deacon and Boozer’s arrival, the camp had fallen to Freaks, and Sarah was presumed dead.
Deacon struggles to cope with this loss, and Boozer suggests moving north to escape the haunting memories. However, Deacon’s bike malfunctions and is subsequently scavenged for parts, leading to the primary goal of earning trust and credits at nearby camps to rebuild the motorcycle.
The genuine motivation behind these efforts is twofold. Early in the game, Deacon’s closest companion, Boozer, falls victim to an attack by the Rippers, a doomsday cult known for peculiar rituals. The Rippers burn a tattoo off Boozer’s arm, inflicting third-degree burns, compelling Deacon to focus on preserving Boozer’s life and well-being.
This primarily involves sourcing sterile bandages and partaking in a mission to gather meat for him. Additionally, Deacon spots a NERO helicopter, the government agency involved in the initial relief effort, flying overhead. This sparks hope in Deacon that Sarah might still be alive, as he had placed her on a NERO helicopter after her stabbing. Consequently, Deacon embarks on a mission to stalk NERO soldiers and scientists to unravel the truth.
On the PC platform, Days Gone Torrent Magnet showcases its optimal performance. Liberated from the constraints of last-gen hardware, the two-year-old PS4 game now boasts an extensive array of visual and performance customization options commonly found in PC games. Running the game on High or Very High settings enhances the sharpness and detail of the post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest’s forests and dilapidated roads. The same applies to character visuals, with Deacon St. John’s jacket and patch-covered cut exhibiting clarity, even outside of cutscenes.
Similar to other recent ports in the past six months, the most significant enhancement lies in the frame rate. Days Gone Torrent permits uncapped frame rates and demonstrates the capability to deliver exceptional performance. With a gaming GPU of upper-middle-tier quality, featuring a recent Core i7 processor and Nvidia 1070 GPU, I consistently achieved a stable 95fps at 1080p and just under 60fps at 1440p.
