All you need is an answering machine message and an address to eliminate every individual within the game’s pixelated, 2D walls. Yet, you’re never provided with a rationale for your deranged actions—the focus is on the pleasure of homicide. Although Hotline Miami can be vexing at times, its frenetic gameplay and polished presentation result in some exquisitely gratifying violence.
The game commences with the unnamed protagonist standing in a room. Mysteriously, three men wearing animal masks make enigmatic remarks about their identity and deeds. Is this real, or some hallucinogenic reverie induced by drugs? There’s not much time for contemplation. The screen fades to black, and you awaken in a squalid apartment in April 1989. A bloodstained shirt lies in the hall as an answering machine light blinks on and off. This sets the stage for most of the 19 chapters constituting Hotline Miami. A brief message instructs you to “tidy up” or “visit” a specific location, followed by a visit to a building filled with alleged criminals that you must dispatch floor by floor.
Navigation is facilitated with the keyboard, while the mouse manages the direction you face and the direction you shoot. You can expand your field of vision to peer deeper into the levels—a crucial aspect, given that even a lone distant gunshot can be lethal. If you’re aiming for stealth, you can choose to hurl your weapon, enabling you to topple and disarm an adversary. Subsequently, standing over your fallen foe with a tap of the spacebar, a few clicks of the mouse will conclude them with a brutal and nauseating impact. It’s an ingenious system that allows swift reactions to the twitchy gameplay, especially considering Hotline Miami presently lacks gamepad support.
However, Hotline Miami Torrent Magnet falters in a few instances that are profoundly aggravating. For example, one floor commences with a few lines of dialogue that necessitate clicking through. Consequently, each time you restart the floor, you’re compelled to click through the same four lines of dialogue before engaging in the action. Issues also arise in boss encounters where you can’t simply shoot the boss dead like other adversaries. Instead, you succumb and then respawn back to the start of the confrontation with little indication of how to vanquish the boss. Discovering some of the intricate attack patterns through trial and error brings relief rather than satisfaction.
As the body count escalates, the sense of detachment from the tragedy unfolding onscreen intensifies. You yearn for more kills to relive that surge of narrowly surviving and witnessing those prominent, flashy numbers bursting across the screen with Peggle-like splendor. You begin to adopt the mindset of the serial killer you’re embodying, reveling in the purity of the task, disregarding the implications. Yet, despite Hotline Miami appearing to gratuitously shatter skulls and splatter blood, it does so with a purpose.
Hotline Miami Torrent’s enigmatic momentum builds up to its climax, where snide cynicism is proffered as a rationale for the initiation of all this machinery of neon fuzz and thumping bass, vivid blood, and fractured identity. Yet, the justification is disarmingly straightforward—the same reason why quarters were inserted into arcade machines from the late ’80s era that Dennaton Games so clearly venerates. Why engage with Hotline Miami? Because it exists. Because it’s enjoyable. Because it warrants playing.
