Maneater Torrent offers many moments like blending absurd fishy chaos and reality TV silliness to create something funny. It’s a bit uneven because of technical problems, annoying fights with marine predators, and repetitive tasks. But the longer you play, the more fun it gets, and the way it’s presented keeps it interesting. The presentation is the best part of Maneater. The game pretends to be a simple cable TV show following Cajun shark hunter “Scaly Pete” as he patrols the dirty waters of the made-up Port Clovis. When Pete kills a pregnant shark, the baby shark escapes and swears revenge after biting off his hand.
What happens next is a wild journey through different habitats, thanks to the bull shark’s ability to survive in both fresh and saltwater, as you chase the goal of getting big and eating Pete. The whole thing is narrated by Parnell as if it were a low-budget nature documentary about the shark and its feud with Pete. Parnell mixes real shark facts with jokes about the people of Port Clovis, rich landowners, human greed for the ocean, and boring fish. The humor is a big part of what makes Maneater fun because otherwise, being a shark might be boring, mostly just eating. You start as a small shark pup, eating everything you can to level up and unlock upgrades that make you stronger and scarier.
Fighting can be tricky, especially against dangerous enemies, as you and your foes dart around. Maneater lacks a good lock-on system, making it easy to lose track of your target. Combat in shallow areas can be messy, with the camera getting stuck and you accidentally getting stranded. But once you unlock cool upgrades, like stunning prey as you swim past or healing when you bite big prey, it gets easier. You’ll have to take out a ton of shark hunters to unlock the upgrades you need. I must’ve taken out hundreds, maybe even a thousand in total. Dodging their attacks gets easier as you improve your health and armor. Even when they start throwing explosives, it’s not much of a problem if you keep moving.
