OMORI Torrent

OMORI Torrent is an RPG game developed and published by Omocat. Omori unfolds a narrative of dual realms. The primary setting is Dreamland, an enchanting and vibrant make-believe world where we assume the role of the youthful, poker-faced Omori and his companions. We encounter the lighthearted and athletic Kel, the persistent and fervent Aubrey, and the more sophisticated and endlessly skilled Hero, who form the core quartet of the game. The clique also includes Omori’s sibling Mari and his closest companion Basil, pivotal to the storyline but not available for play.

Dreamland serves as the primary backdrop, resembling the structure of the Mother series with its region-based layout and turn-based skirmishes initiated by encountering an adversary sprite in the field. NPCs here converse in the same whimsical and nonsensical manner characteristic of an indie Mother-like. At their peak, these segments capture the charm of their inspirations, but at their nadir, they can feel prolonged and somewhat repetitive during an average 30-hour playthrough.

The alternative realm is the ‘actual’ one. In these relatively condensed and more experimental intervals, we embody Sunny, a teenager resembling an older Omori. Sunny’s family is gearing up to leave the suburban town of his upbringing, and these parts delve into his final days there. The name Omori is a nod to the Japanese term hikikomori, describing individuals opting for secluded lives at home.

It’s evident that Sunny has transformed into this, and the character Omori appears to be a younger iteration relishing the delights of childhood. There are even two distinct pathways the player can embark upon based on a specific decision made by Sunny, yielding significant variations in the endgame and available conclusions. Without disclosing specifics, the ingenuity ingrained in the narrative design of these Sunny segments elevates Omori from a respectable RPG to something genuinely remarkable.

The interplay between Omori’s fantastical realm and Sunny’s real existence constitutes the true narrative depth of Omori. As I advanced through the game, the links connecting Omori, Sunny, their friends, and their respective domains started unraveling in my mind. True to the essence of psychological horror, the game avoids explicit explanations, entrusting the player to interpret the unfolding deeper and darker secrets of the story.

OMORI Torrent is a game where the less you know about the plot, the more impactful the experience. However, it’s crucial to underscore the gravity of the content warning and recognize that awareness of the game addressing themes of suicide and depression does not diminish its essence. It might lead you, as it did for me, to draw premature conclusions that never come to fruition. This game addresses mortality, yet features a character named Hot Diggity Dog. It juggles seriousness and levity, a duality that won’t escape most players.
