If a character can be equipped with specific gear, you can opt to forgo any type of shield and instead equip them with a net. In battle, the net can be hurled from two spaces away to immobilize an enemy to their position for the subsequent turn. Yet, when only one enemy remains on the field, you can cast your net to enlist them, incorporating them into the roster of characters under your command.
It mirrors the same attraction that propelled Pokémon to widespread popularity, and striving to preserve the most enticing member of the enemy party’s life so you can capture them at the fight’s conclusion adds a captivating twist to the campaign.
Various types of units exist, and while their attacks and abilities can be altered with an array of equipment, they all fulfill specific roles–archers assail from a distance, cupcakes can provide healing but lack offensive capabilities, mushrooms can disperse poisonous clouds, and so forth. However, capturing isn’t confined to conventional adversaries alone–if you can vanquish all of a boss character’s subordinates, you can enlist characters integral to the game’s narrative.
The character designs maintain the same cartoonish and amusing aesthetic as The Behemoth’s characters always have, featuring numerous grotesque-looking monsters and unconventional interpretations of standard RPG classes, intensifying the allure of recruiting as many as possible–even if, at a certain juncture, it dawns on you that you’ll likely never deploy most of your under-leveled recruits.
Pit People Torrent offers an enjoyable spin on the turn-based strategy genre, even if it doesn’t delve into the deepest realms. The process of building an army using the recruitment mechanics is highly enjoyable, and achieving a challenging triumph is consistently gratifying, particularly when navigating through with only a solitary, battered unit remaining.
On that note, a brief word of caution–refrain from initiating the game with permadeath activated, regardless of your customary inclination in this genre. Losing specific characters crucial for undertaking story missions means you won’t be able to complete the game. Although you can restart a battle, conquering a match without any losses poses a formidable challenge.
