Saints Row Torrent is an action game developed by Volition and published by Deep Silver. Saints Row is a rollicking driving/shooting/flying ragdoll-em-up where you lead a misnamed gang of charmingly unhinged individuals. The Saints are endearing sociopaths, gracefully shifting between organized crime and lively escapades, such as hurling themselves into traffic for insurance payouts and engaging in some casual drug trading on the side. That’s likely the sole depiction vague enough to encompass every game in the series, including this recent reboot, without calling it a Grand Theft Auto clone with better humor.
The urban landscape stands out as my favorite aspect, offering a breath of fresh air to the Saints Row experience as a whole. Santo Ileso is a fictional blend of the Southwestern United States, an astonishingly vast region encompassing numerous equally immense states. While Saints Row 3 and 4 unfolded in the decidedly drab Steelport, Santo Ileso is saturated with vibrant hues.
Featuring a neon-lit strip reminiscent of a slice of Las Vegas, a historic old town with an Alamo Mission-esque heritage site, and a cutting-edge business center reminiscent of California, the setting is as diverse as the sprawling orange deserts of Arizona and Utah. Strolling through Santol Ileso, you can stumble upon charming pedestrianized areas, picturesque beauty spots, eccentric sculptures, and unmistakable local eateries or dive bars.
A Saints Row Torrent Magnet narrative that begins from scratch may delight fans yearning for the ‘grit’ of Saints Row 2, but judging by online sentiments, it’s met with disdain already. The reboot introduces a fresh cast, despised from the initial trailer. Online, these Saints have been labeled as zoomers, millennials, and even hipsters—a broad spectrum of meaningless descriptors all translating to “young people I don’t understand.
Even with a default face, the wardrobe choices enable you to play around with layers, mixing and matching shirts under jackets and choosing socks independently from shoes. This marks a departure from Saints Row’s previous approach since embracing physics-based clothing. However, the trade-off is that coats and skirts feel notably rigid, and most hairstyles are static. The limitations became apparent when I tried a ponytail, only to find it clipping through my face. Nonetheless, whether you prefer your character as a leather-jacketed badass, a brightly attired goofball, or someone dressed as a taco, Saints Row offers ample customization.
In contrast to antics like spraying sewage on mansions or navigating a car while fending off a tiger-riding shotgun, the reboot’s activities seem relatively grounded. One of them essentially involves taking photos. Additionally, apart from the thrustbusters and a foam glove pistol, the majority of weapons are genuine firearms. While perks are allowing you to hurl antigravity grenades or summon backup Saints out of thin air, you’re restricted to selecting four for your ability wheel at a time. Unfortunately, half the time, the backup Saints stand idly by while getting shot.
Saints Row Torrent excels when it embraces the absurd, reaching its pinnacle with moments like participating in a citywide LARP where you battle Mad Max enthusiasts wielding foam weapons while donning cardboard armor. The reboot occasionally forgets this essence during extended periods but, when it remembers, it delivers moments of sheer lunacy that the game could use more of.
