However, that standard depiction undersells the game. From this point onward, things become peculiar. Peculiar. Instead of the usual warrior elf or similar, you control a young boy named Isaac. Sound somewhat endearing? It’s not. Isaac is fleeing from his mother, who undergoes some form of prophecy/mental breakdown in the stick-figure opening cinematic and attempts to end her son’s life on the command of God.

Confiscating the kid’s Game Boy and toys isn’t sufficient for the old Almighty, who insists on Mom replicating the Abraham narrative and sacrificing her son to prove her devotion. Just before Mom bursts into Isaac’s bedroom with a butcher knife, though, he escapes down a hatchway into an eerie basement, and the game kicks off.

So if you’ve spent time in a sect or harbor any kind of maternal concerns, you might want to avert your gaze during the introductory video. And perhaps later on as well. Completing each stage earns the debatable reward of a new cinematic, always featuring some gruesome nightmare like other kids defecating on Isaac, his mother persistently pushing him away, him plummeting to his demise, and someone presenting him a gift box filled with excrement.

Occasionally, the game leans toward the Satanic, with various demonic choices and power-ups. At other times, it illustrates an inner struggle as Isaac confronts various doppelganger adversaries embodying deadly sins such as lethargy and jealousy. The game always goes out of its way to be distinctive and perhaps prompt contemplation of a profound message, even when it almost assuredly doesn’t.

Levels also confront you with elective challenges, like chambers that can only be unlocked with keys, perilous rooms with toothy entrances, stores where you can purchase items, special chambers like an amusement arcade where you can play games to attempt to earn items, and much more. The visuals are also unsettling in that they merge an innocent, pixelated design more suited to a cheerful eight-bit console game than something this macabre. The appearance of the game makes you anticipate something child-friendly and G-rated, to the extent that I couldn’t quite believe that these graphics were being employed to depict bloody trails behind a little kid and the shattered remains of malevolent infants. The audio is nearly as infectious as the gameplay, with the most notable part of it being the 80s hair metal score that sounds like it was devised during a collaboration between Cinderella and Iron Maiden.
