As always, the strength of a Telltale game lies in its story, and it stands out here. While the cel-shaded graphics resemble the colorful comics of the 1980s, the atmosphere within them is more reminiscent of Michael Mann’s later work, capturing the intensity of 1980s New York and the feeling of grim isolation, complemented by a minimalistic, appropriately synth-heavy score. Surprisingly, it conveys this atmosphere even in the game’s grandest moments, whether in Fabletown’s luxurious offices or the shady hideouts of its criminal elite.
The true essence of The Wolf Among Us lies in the game’s core – Bigby Wolf. If The Walking Dead was ultimately shaped by how you protected Clementine’s soul, the same can be said for Bigby Wolf here. The once-and-future Big Bad Wolf in the comics is like Wolverine donning Sam Spade’s trench coat. He’s blunt, distant, and contemplative, haunted by his past wrongdoings. The game’s Bigby is more akin to Sawyer from Lost, and even if you opt for the most ruthless choices, The Wolf Among Us portrays Bigby as a distinct, lighter, and more humane character, open to change.
How do you handle Mr. Toad’s financial struggles throughout the game, potentially facing deportation along with his innocent young son? How do you treat an injured troll, knowing you’re responsible for her sister’s death, and considering the nature of the crimes, you couldn’t have done more? There’s a recurring theme of people reminiscing about the old land of fables as “the old neighborhood” or “the old times,” similar to someone lecturing the hero in one of Ben Affleck’s Boston crime dramas.
Most of these individuals don’t forgive The Big Bad Wolf for his misdeeds. Gaining their trust determines the outcome of the season’s final crucial moments, and the result is not just about the integrity of a single character but the heart of a community. Playing as Bigby is like managing a city from within.
