Need for Speed Shift Torrent is a racing game that tries to do many things, and the good news is that it does most of them well. However, the not-so-good news is that Shift doesn’t do much that other racing games haven’t done before it, and it excels at nothing. The racing, the car and track choices, the vehicle customization and damage system, the career mode, the online play, the opponent AI—these things are all good, but none of them stand out as great.

Depending on the type of racing game you usually play, being put into the driver’s seat for a practice lap at the beginning of Shift’s Career mode might go smoothly or not so well. Your performance on this lap decides your default difficulty level and handling style, and it’s called the “Trial of Fire.” There are no opponents to compete against, but getting used to Shift’s controls can be tricky on its own.

Like a simulation game, NFS Shift encourages you to brake early for turns, penalizes you for straying too far from the racing line, and, at least by default, gives you a very sensitive steering setup. However, like an arcade racer, Shift rewards you for drifting around corners, bumping into opponents, and even making opponents spin out or go off the track. It’s an awkward middle ground that you might never feel completely comfortable with.

Another of Shift’s features that doesn’t live up to its full potential is car customization. There are about 55 cars to collect in Shift, although you never have enough space in your garage for even half of them. These cars can be repainted, you can add a few different racing designs to them, and some of the performance upgrades you can buy for them include stylish body kits, but the custom design tool is not very good. The available vinyl includes basic shapes, logos, flames, and tribal designs, as well as various creative sets that you unlock as you progress through your career—including badges that highlight some of your achievements.

Need for Speed Shift Torrent Magnet’s presentation is functional but lacks refinement. Dark backgrounds work fairly well when contrasted with the white text of menus, but when you’re browsing for cars with paint jobs that reflect the dark surroundings, the lack of light doesn’t do the vehicles justice. The Lamborghini Reventon displayed in this dimly lit showroom is dark gray, and you might need to adjust your TV’s contrast to see it. The dark-blue-and-black Bugatti Veyron doesn’t fare much better.

Need for Speed Shift Torrent marks a triumphant return for EA’s iconic racing series. Slightly Mad Studios has created a driving experience that, while not completely realistic in terms of its simulation aspects, is incredibly accurate in portraying the sensation of racing around some of the world’s premier racing tracks. The career mode could have been improved, but the driving experience itself is outstanding.
